An App to Remember Things You Did Together

Someone asks how long you've been together and you do the maths out loud, and then — because they're being polite — they ask what you've actually done. And you go blank.

Not because there's nothing. Because there's four years of it and none of it is filed. The birthday where the restaurant lost your booking and you ended up eating chips on a wall. The Sunday you walked to the next village for no reason. The bad hotel with the good view. All of it happened. None of it is anywhere you can reach in under ten minutes.

Your phone has the photos, technically. Eleven thousand of them, in date order, interleaved with screenshots of parking signs and forty near-identical pictures of the same dog. The camera roll is a warehouse, not an album. It keeps everything and therefore surfaces nothing.

The gap between having it and keeping it

There's a difference between a photo of a night and a record of it.

The photo has the terrace in it. It doesn't have the reason you were laughing, or the fact that this was the night one of you finally said the thing, or that the waiter sang. Six years on, the photo is a picture of two people at a table. The bit worth keeping was never in the frame.

That's the small, ordinary loss. Not that you forget the big things — you don't. It's that the medium things quietly go: the ones that were lovely at the time and were never quite an occasion, and so were never quite written down.

What a Memory is

And up to ten photos — a deliberate handful rather than the whole burst, because ten is roughly what a night actually deserves and choosing them is half the point.

The note is yours specifically. You keep the evening your way; the other person keeps it theirs. Same night, two versions, both true. There's something quietly right about that.

Where they live

Your Memories sit in your profile. Not buried in a chat, not scrolling away under whatever arrived this morning — a place you go on purpose, in the order you lived them.

Which means the question that started all this has an answer. What have you two actually done? You scroll. There's the wall with the chips. There's the village walk. There's the bad hotel, and you remember the view before you remember the hotel, which is how it should be.

It's also the honest use of it, the one nobody puts in an app description: this is what you look at on a bad week. Not as a highlight reel — a highlight reel would be a lie and you'd know it. Just as evidence. You have done a lot together, and here it is, dated.

The morning after

Keeping something is a thirty-second job that nobody remembers to do, because the moment you'd think of it is the moment you're happiest and least likely to reach for your phone. Good. Stay in it.

So Blinko asks the next morning instead. One notification, around nine, the day after the plan: How was it? Keep it as a memory.

Once. That's the whole campaign. If you ignore it, it doesn't come back for that plan — no second prompt, no third, no gentle weekly escalation to be a good curator of your own life. It asked, you were busy, fine. It won't ask again.

Say yes and you're in the note field while the evening is still last night rather than a vague thing in March.

The loop it closes

This is the far end of something. A place gets mentioned and goes on your shortlist. The shortlist becomes an actual date night with a time on it. The time on it becomes an evening — sometimes three places in one night, if you're being ambitious — and then, the morning after, the evening becomes a card with your handwriting on it.

Four years of that is not a folder. It's the record of what the two of you have been like.
